Trailer Tuesday - Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Sorry for the late blog update today. Our office Internet was down all morning... Anyway, I'm going to have to keep this post pretty short as a result. Not that I really much much to say about today's trailer.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the third film in Fox's popular CGI-animated Ice Age series. This time the migrating mammals stumble across a secret subterranean world where dinosaurs still thrive. Of course it isn't long before Sid the Sloth (John Leguizamo) gets into all kinds of trouble when he decides to adopt a nest of dinosaur eggs. Meanwhile, his friends all have problems of their own.

The trailer for Ice Age 3 looks funny enough (hopefully it hasn't revealed the most amusing moments a la Monsters Vs. Aliens) and yes, the franchise's entire all-star voice cast is back - including Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and Denis Leary. For some new flavour this time around the filmmakers have even added Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz's Simon Pegg to the cast as Buck, a one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel.

Still though, I'm wary of gleefully embracing this film without any reservations. By the time movie #3 in most franchises, whether animated or live action, rolls around, most of the freshness has already been wrung from the initial concept. It happens time and time again in greedy Hollywood. And unfortunately, beloved characters often pay the price. Having already run their full story arc, but needing to be present, they usually just transform into cardboard and end up standing stiffly in the background with nothing to do.

Reading the plot synopsis for Ice Age 3, it sounds at least as if the filmmakers have given each of main characters something to do. But we'll see.

These mutterings aside, of course I'll still be watching Dawn of the Dinosaurs! I'll happily sit through 70 minutes of Sid pissing off everyone with his clumsy, juvenile behaviour if it means I get my 20 minutes of what really matters - Sabretooth squirrel-thing Scrat and his endless quest for an acorn stash. And this time he has a potential girlfriend to contend with...

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opens in 2D and 3D format in North America on 1 July, and in South Africa just a few days later on Friday, 3 July.
