Trailer Tuesday: Star Trek

I don't think it's a stretch to say that while Star Wars fans have had much to crow about over the past few decades, what with George Lucas dishing out re-releases and a whole new trilogy, Trekkies, those devoted followers of that other hit sci-fi franchise, Star Trek have been waiting patiently for someone to throw them a cinematic bone.

Sure there were the Star Trek: The Next Generation films, which I admit I thoroughly enjoyed - especially since The Next Generation was the only one of the Star Trek TV series that I ever watched. However, as the original Star Trek cast, including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, grew ever older and passed away, it looked like the further big screen adventures of the original Starship Enterprise crew were forever over. And man, the formula was growing tired.

Then Alias and Lost writer-director, J.J. Abrams came up with the idea for a franchise reboot (all the rage these days!), or, rather, a prequel that focuses on how Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu, Chekov and Scotty all came together to "boldly go where no man has gone before."

According to rumours, the plot of this new Star Trek centres on a group of Romulans, headed by the villainous Nero (Eric Bana), who decide to rewrite history in their favour by travelling back in time. To defeat them, a much older Spock (a returning Leonard Nimoy) must also head pack into the past and enlist the help of his younger self.

Watching the trailer, the film does look considerably "rebooted," with a glossy, contemporary feel, tons of action and an appealing young cast - Chris (Princess Diaries 2) Pine, Zachary (Heroes) Quinto, Karl (Doom) Urban, Simon (Shaun of the Dead) Pegg, Zoe (Center Stage) Saldana, John (Harold & Kumar) Cho, Anton (Huff) Yelchin - stepping into a set of iconic roles.

I'm certainly intrigued about the new Star Trek, as I'm sure many casual cinema goers will be. As for the hardcore Trekkies, well, we'll just have to wait and see how they react to the finished, clearly very different product.

Star Trek is set for release on 8 May 2009.
