Trailer Tuesday: Step Brothers

Right, so this is the Mature Audiences Only trailer for Step Brothers, the goofy new comedy that reteams the "Shake & Bake" duo of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. If you're interested, you can also watch the bland general release trailer, which includes some different scenes, here.

Anyway, the plot synopsis of Step Brothers is as follows:

In Step Brothers, Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a sporadically employed 39-year-old who lives with his mother, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen). Reilly plays Dale Doback, a terminally unemployed 40-year-old who lives with his father, Robert (Richard Jenkins). When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step-brothers. As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle-aged, immature, overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their parents back together. To pull it off, they must form an unlikely bond that will maybe, just maybe, finally get them out of the house

I'm actually pretty accepting of dumb, immature comedies, but frankly I was a little disappointed by the trailer for Step Brothers - especially since the film comes from the same creative team responsible for Talladega Nights and that other cult hit Will Ferrell comedy, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Then again, the more times I watch the trailer, the more I'm amused by the bunk beds sequence and the guys' shared love for velociraptors and John Stamos... so perhaps I'll give Step Brothers a chance at the cinema.

I know the more times I watched Talladega Nights, the funnier I found that too (You'd be surprised how often in real life you get to use the line, "When you're not first, you're last!"). Hmmm, perhaps Will Ferrell movies are like Madonna songs - only through repeat ad nauseum exposure do you come to like them?

Seriously, Step Brothers just has to be funnier than Failure to Launch, that pitiful other "grown son living at home" comedy. Step Brothers has achieved a middle of the road 53% over at Rotten Tomatoes, which means it has actually scored much higher with reviewers than most mainstream comedies of recent months.

Step Brothers is released in South Africa on 10 October... Sheesh, it reminds me that I haven't been to movies now in weeks.
