Girlz ‘N’ Games webcomic #79: The Girl Who Toyed with Lesbians

And so begins Girlz ‘N’ Games’ own version of Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest). So brace yourself for 3 comics referencing the bestselling series of novels, or, more accurately, the acclaimed Swedish movies based on them – which I’ve finally been able to watch over the past 3 months.

The first of the comics is pretty straightforward and understandable – even if you aren’t too familiar with the Trilogy’s title character: socially dysfunctional goth hacker Lisbeth Salander. Played with scary intensity by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish movies (and soon to be portrayed by Rooney Mara in American film versions), Lisbeth is a complex young woman who’s developed serious trust issues after years of abuse by respected middle aged men who are supposed to be protecting her interests. It’s hardly surprising then that Lisbeth in her twenties struggles with intimacy, and is just as likely to take a female lover as a male one.

And she does just that, with surprising graphicness, in the film version of The Girl Who Played with Fire. Then again, perhaps it’s only eye-widening to us who are typically exposed to sexually squeamish, mainstream American cinema (I’m not talking about American porn of course!). Lovers of European films probably won’t even bat an eyelid at Lisbeth’s antics, seeing as Old Worlders are apparently a lot more relaxed about sex, and its depiction in the Arts. And that really is the ultimate point of Girlz ‘N’ Games #79.

For the record, I’m very happy with how the facial expressions turned out in this comic – especially Erin’s.
